Homemade Insect Repellens using Essential Oils or Herbs

Jar of a mixture using Bug off and Whisky, mint and some essential oils
OI like to make this essential oil mixture when the biting insects and mosquitoes are out.

You can use any bottle but a spray bottle comes in really handy. You can use a premixed essential oil such as Bug Off from Rocky Mountain Oils. These mixtures have essentially one or more of the following essential oils: Peppermint, Lavender, Citronella, Cinnamon Bark, Basil, Eucalyptus globulus, Lemongrass, Eucalyptus radiata, Eucalyptus citriodora. If you make you own mixture I suggest at least having a mint in the mixture.

A spray bottle or another jar (8 oz. size
Fill 1/2 full with distilled or boiled water
Add Apple cider vinegar, witch hazel or whiskey to fill almost to the top
Add 1/2 tsp vegetable glycerin if using
Add 30-50 drops of essential oils to desired scent.

The more oils you use, the stronger the spray will be. Other scents to put into the mixture are Rosemary, Clove, Cajeput.

This spray works great for about 1/2 hour and smells great.

Mixture Using Dried or Fresh Herbs

If you do not have essential oils or they are too costly then you can make a mixture using dried herbs.

1 32 ounce bottle of Apple Cider Vinegar
2 tablespoons each of dried Sage, Rosemary, Lavender, Thyme and Mint
At least quart size glass jar with airtight lid

Shake daily for 2-3 weeks. After 2-3 weeks strain the mixture into a airtight container and when you want to use dilute in half with water in a spray bottle. Store in a refrigerator.

Quick Insect Repellent

In a pinch you can rub yourself with mint to help prevent insect bites. I have a patch near my back door.
